    Is it what we want?

WE WANT SPA EXPERIENCES WHICH ARE RAW, REMOTE AND RARE. ROVING ASIA REPORTER JUDY CHAPMAN GETS DOWN TO EARTH AND FINDS THAT THE MORE PRIMITIVE THE RESORT, THE MORE LUXURIOUS THE EXPERIENCE

Who could have predicted that five star destinations would become so down to earth? According to world experts, we want experiences that are as raw, remote and rare especially when it comes to spas. I have spent many months trekking around the world experiencing as many spas as possible, and I have to admit when I first caught sight of the new Earth Spa at the Evason Hideaway in Hua Hin, Thailand I was a bit perturbed. A spa without air-con, electricity or running water? Now that might seem a little too raw, especially for somewhere hailed as a luxury retreat.

Keeping an open mind, I found myself standing in front of a cluster of aptly named earth domes fashioned from local clay and rice husk, and it didn't look quite like the postcard holiday I'd been dreaming about. There were no glamorous products lining the retail shelves here. But I soon learnt that most of their spa treatments were made from freshly picked ingredients from the organic garden nearby. The Earth Spa reinforced what I had already discovered; sometimes the more primitive the resort, the more luxurious the experience. Indeed, after a while, sanctuaries like The Earth Spa offer a welcome breath of fresh air after the zen-like interiors you see everywhere.

Megan Larsen, founder of the natural spa therapy brand, Sodashi, explains: Today's traveller is increasingly knowledgeable. They want organic food options on the menu, a yoga mat in their suite and chemical-free skincare in the spa. Larsen believes that since many guests are already practicing a wellness lifestyle at home, it's only natural that they demand the same lifestyle choices while on holiday. Products and treatments are like food and people can sense if they are nourishing and active adds Larsen. She believes that the future of the spa industry's reputation depends not only on the quality of ingredients used but the environment in which they are made.
