    Morocco

    Africa's playground

    Morocco
THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT MOROCCO'S FROM MEDIEVAL FES TO THE THROBBING PULSE OF MARRAKECH, THE SEA SWEPT SHORES OF ESSAOURIA AND THE HIGH PASSES IN THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS. IT'S EXOTIC BUT NOT TOO EXOTIC, IT'S FAR BUT NOT TOO FAR.

A cultural melting pot with a magnetic charm that will pull you back again and again. Even within a single city, cultures collide. Donkeys go where taxis cannot pass, and a fully veiled woman showing only her eyes, shops alongside a European woman in a kneelength skirt.

North Africa's playground has long been a magnet for the rich and famous everyone from Madonna to Jade Jagger and Bruce Willis has been seen lounging in some Riad or spa. Jimmy Choo's and a niqab are de rigeur. Writers, painters, actors and musicians have always been inspired by Morocco. Jimi Hendrix was inspired to write Castles in the Sand by the ruined castle on the beach in Essaouria. William Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch in Tangier and Yves Saint Laurent created a beautiful home in Marrakech, where a visit to the verdant Le Jardin Majorelle is a must. The list of those who have been influenced and captivated by this beautiful country continues... Sean Connery, John Malkovitch, Elizabeth Taylor Its barefoot boho chic captures the imagination like nowhere else.

Morocco's evolution as the jetset's destination of choice has been surprisingly quick when you consider that less than a hundred years ago Sultan Moulay Hafid reigned supreme over a warring medieval state. The French stepped in in 1912 to quell the increasing unrest and create an African outpost, bringing stability and European infrastructure. Morocco gained independence in 1956 and is now energetically ruled by its young king, Crown Prince Sidi Mohammed, (known locally as M6 on account of being Mohammed VI). His aim is to see tourism increase and all over Morocco development is progressing at a rapid rate. The proliferation of riads, forts, kasbahs and ksours being transformed into enchanting boutique hotels and spas means there has never been a better time to visit Morocco.
