VERY FEW PERFORMERS ARE EQUALLY HIGHLY ACCLAIMED AS ACTORS AND SINGERS. EVEN FEWER SUCCESSFULLY SWITCH BETWEEN PRESENTING PRIME-TIME TV AND SERIOUS DRAMA. CLAIRE SWEENEY HAS DONE IT ALL.
There's no arguing with the fact that modern performers have to be versatile. But to branch out successfully from sit-com to presenter or singer to actress is not an easy feat to achieve. So how come Claire Sweeney has succeeded where so many others - Davina McCall and all of the Spice Girls to name a few - have struggled?
Claire Sweeney first appeared on British TV as lesbian gangster, Lindsey Corkhill, in Liverpool based soap, Brookside. So when she turned up in Celebrity Big Brother in 2001, the public thought they knew this girl, who genuinely does come from �a rough and ready area in Liverpool�. But her own personality was very different from Lindsey; Sweeney was nice and normal and sweet (with a cracking singing voice that she cannily showcased as much as possible).
The nation lapped her up. She was voted into second place behind the already very famous dead-pan comedian Jack Dee, and her career and life changed overnight.
There followed her �dream come true� stint as Roxie Hart in Chicago, another part in Fosse and loads of opportunities to present high profile entertainment shows on TV. She modelled for M&S, became the Forces' Sweetheart, appeared in commercials and released an album.
