CAROLINE DARLINGTON VISITS THE HISTORIC SPA TOWN BADEN-BADEN, SET WITHIN GERMANY'S BLACK FOREST AND CUCKOO CLOCK LAND
There's a lot more to the Black Forest than its gateau. Cuckoo clocks were invented here. Hansel and Gretel played out their tale deep within the evergreens. Local legends say that it is haunted by werewolves and sorcerers as well as good faeries, more recently of course by the England world cup football team and their other halves.
Then there are those rather striking hats. Grand Duchess Luise von Baden made the Bollenhut famous during her visits in Victorian times to the thermal baths throughout the region. The traditional hats now carry so many pom-poms that they weigh in at 2kg+. I have it, though, on good authority that the more recent English lady visitors who might like to style themselves as grand duchesses were not as attracted by the Bollenhte as they were by the modern designer shops of Baden-Baden.
I have fond memories of the Black Forest having lived there for a year in the 70s and having made many visits since. I especially treasure moments with family friend, Horst Scharfenberg. He was Germany's first television chef, a son of Baden-Baden, expert on local cuisine and wines and a generous host. He loved Baden-Baden and shared many anecdotes, such as that until 1931, the town was known as Baden in Baden, just as we would have said Bath in Somerset.
