Dubai
Arabian pearl
ORIGINALLY A PROSPEROUS PEARL FARMING PORT, DUBAI HAS METAMORPHOSED OVER THE LAST FIFTY YEARS INTO THE EPITOME OF POLISHED LUXURY. IT'S A SOPHISTICATED FANCIFUL DESTINATION WHERE THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE PARTY TIL DAWN AND ARCHITECTURAL DREAMS COME TRUE. HEATHER DARWALL-SMITH PUTS ON HER PRADA HEELS AND LIVES THE JETSET LIFE ARABIAN SYLE
There is a shared belief that Dubai owes its prosperity to oil. But it is really thanks to the humble oyster, rather than the third largest oil reserves in the world, that this unique city exists. Pearls were the key commodity here until the Japanese discovered how to manufacture man-made pearls, and the market for the real thing collapsed. Ever since then, the real thing is not something that Dubai has troubled itself with rediscovering. Just as pearls are created from a single grain of sand, so modern, gleaming Dubai has risen from nothing but parched desert wasteland. This city is as much a living monument to man's most spectacular engineering accomplishments, as it is to his most outrageous folly.

The architectural skyline meanwhile, is one of the most constantly changing and opulent on Earth. The seven independent emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah came together to form the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in1971. While Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the UAE, Dubai remains its commercial centre. Standing testament to the fifty-year tourism plan of HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum and now in the hands of his sons, Dubai is among the top holiday destinations in the world. The allure is so strong that tourists flock to be a part of it.
